Q: What is estrogen?
A. Estrogen is a hormone produced mainly by our ovaries that helps our bodies develop and maintain our reproductive system. More specifically, estrogen (along with another reproductive hormone, called progesterone) regulates our menstrual cycles. When menopause happens and we stop having menstrual periods, it is because our ovaries have stopped producing enough of these two hormones.

It’s no secret that smoking is bad for our lungs, but did you know that it’s bad for our other organs too? That includes – yes, you guessed it! – the vagina.
Smoking cigarettes affects our blood circulation. Since blood carries oxygen to our organs, that means the vaginal tissues will get less oxygen if you smoke. Without enough blood and oxygen, the vagina is at a higher risk for the changes associated with vaginal atrophy… and the symptoms that come along with those changes.
Smoking has also been shown to lower the levels of estrogen in our bodies, which – as we know – affects the vaginal tissues and can lead to The Big Ow.
